Oceans of the world and the facts of major oceans - Information on Oceans

Two Hundred million years ago, all the land was connected in one giant super continent and we have named it as Pangea which was surrounded by single enormous oceans. All the ocean water on earth is still connected in different places. Now let us learn the names of oceans in the world and information on oceans.

Oceans

Oceans cover nearly three-fourths of Earth's surface. They surround all the continents and give earth its blue appearance when viewed from space.Oceans composed of 139 million square miles of water body.Ocean water contains traces of all chemical elements found on earth along with 3.5 percent salt, hence is enables life on earth as part of the water cycle. One of the important function of ocean is the regulation of global temperature by absorbing heat in summer and releasing it in winter.Various factors like Currents, wind, density gradients and earth's rotation keep the ocean in motion. As earth spins wind and currents are deflected to the right in northern hemisphere and left in southern hemisphere transporting warm water from equatorial regions into much colder polar regions.

Types of the Ocean

Scientist or geographers who study oceans divide it into four entities.we can go through the list of oceans in the world and learn facts about those major oceans of the world. The following are the four types of oceans on the earth:
1.Pacific Ocean
2.Atlantic Ocean
3.Indian Ocean
4.Arctic Ocean

Pacific Ocean

The area of the Pacific Ocean is 165,600,700 sq.km(64,186,300 square miles) and hence it is the largest ocean and water body of earth's surface and covers about one-third of earth's total land area.It is about 18 times the size of the Unites States. This vast ocean has the deepest point on earth named Mariana Trench which is 35,840 feet or 10,924 meter deep. This Ocean was named by Magellan which meant the "peaceful sea".The Constant winds keep temperatures between 70 to 80 degree Fahrenheit near the equator.Monsoons occur from Japan to new Guinea between June and October.Pacific ocean contains about 25,000 islands more than the rest of the world's oceans added together. The equator divides the ocean into North and south Pacific ocean.Due to the effects of plate tectonics, the Pacific Ocean is shrinking by 2.5 cm per year on all three sides. On other hand, the Atlantic Ocean is increasing in size. The Pacific Ocean was formed 750 million years ago by the breakup of Rodinia, and it is called the Panthalassic Ocean until the breakup of Pangea, about 200 million years ago.The ocean was first mapped by Abraham Ortelius and he named it as Maris Pacifici. The volume of water in the ocean is nearly 710,000,000 cubic kilometer.

Pacific Ocean

Atlantic Ocean

The area of the Atlantic ocean is nearly 86,223,600 sq.km(33,420,000 square miles) and it cover 9.5 times the size of the United States and also it is the second largest ocean. The deepest point of this Ocean is called as Puerto Rico Trench and is 28,232 feet deep. The weather is Cold, hot and windy from june to November, hurricanes can form off the coast of Africa and move west to North America. This Atlantic ocean surrounds the world's largest island, Greenland.Endangered marine species include the manatee, seals, sea lions, turtles, and whales reside within the Ocean.Atlantic Ocean is the saltiest of all the major oceans in the world.

Atlantic ocean

Indian Ocean

The area of the Indian Ocean is 73,144,300 sq.km(28,350,500 square miles) which is about 8 times the size of the United States and it is the world third largest ocean. The deepest point of the ocean is called as Java trench and it is 23,376 feet deep(7,125 m). The weather of the Ocean is mainly hot and Cyclones from October to June. It is said that Chinese explorers crossed it long before European explorers ventured into Atlantic.Indian ocean is said to be the "mine of Gems".Volume of water in this ocean is 246,000,000 cubic kilometer and the average depth is 3,700 m.The Indian Ocean is the warmest ocean in the world.Zambezi, Shatt al-Arab, Indus, Godavari, Krishna, Narmada, Ganges, Brahmaputra, Jubba and Irrawaddy are some rivers that flow into the Indian Ocean.Indian ocean is the youngest of all the major Oceans. This ocean has the largest concentration of phytoplankton and endangered marine species like dugong, seals, turtles, and whales.

Indian Ocean

Arctic Ocean

Arctic ocean covers an area of 13,172,700 sq.km which is about 1.5 times the size of the United States and yes, it is the smallest and shallowest ocean of all and the deepest point of the ocean is about 15,340 feet or 4,665 m deep which is called as the Fram Basin. The ocean is almost completely frozen with a layer of ice 10 feet thick at months of October to June also with no sunlight in the winter months. water is highly saltier because the pure water freezes first leaving the unfrozen part with a higher concentration of salt.Endangered marine species in the Arctic Ocean include walruses and whales and has little plant life in it.It is believed that nearly 25 percent of world's undiscovered oil and natural gas resources lie beneath the ocean.

Arctic ocean

Ocean Floor

The ocean floor contains many physical features starting with continental shelf, the submerged extension of the continents. The shelf gradually descends before dropping of sharply in the continental slope and again softening in the continental rise. The deep ocean floor is called abyssal plain and it formed when sediments collects over rough parts of the ocean floor, it has underwater volcanoes as well as Mid ocean Ridge a mountain chain more than 40,000 miles long. Some areas of the ocean floor also have deep narrow depressions called trenches(Mariana trench).Scientists know more about the surface of the moon than they know about the ocean floor.

This article explained on the oceans of the world, list of all oceans, information of oceans and gave facts on ocean types and ocean floor.
